Diablo II: Pindlethon V

A Pindlethon is an event run about once per year in the SPF. The basic idea is that each participant kills Pindleskin two thousand times during the month long event. Each elite unique and set item is considered a qualifier and those numbers are tracked. The participant with the best 5 items wins. Normally the top few players get to take an item or two from those below them, but that was left out of this Pindlethon. That was something I don't mind too much since I am not a big fan of losing my best items or any grailers I might have picked up along the way. I'd survive it, but still not be too keen about the idea.

During the Pindlethon I placed all my qualifiers into an ATMA stash, and then once the tournament was over I promptly put them all into my general stashes. As a result I don't actually have hard numbers or data as to what I found. However I do recall my finds being one S/U per every 90-100 runs. Much higher percentage than a lot of the other runners. But at least I got my times down to around 25 seconds per run. It means I didn't waste too much time with this one, and found several grailers to boot.

My top 5 were:
1. Ohm Rune

Cannot Be Frozen

Overall I found seven grailers and five TC87 items. But still the prize was my only high rune (HR), the Ohm. I had found a Vex a while back in the Mephathon but lost it due to a PEBCAK problem when backing up my ATMA stashes. As a result this is my one and only HR at this point. Along with this I did gain an extra level with Malice, my Meteorb runner, bringing her to level 94 overall. So it was a very successful Pindlethon, all of my goals were accomplished so I'm happy with the results even though I didn't get more than two 3rd place votes.

Diablo II: MFO #3

The Magic Find Olympics (MFO) is a contest run twice a year on the Single Player Diablo II forum. The basic premise is that each contestant picks something to run: Baal, Mephisto, Level 85 areas or Super Uniques. Then everyone has nine days to run those areas as much as possible, the person with the best items found wins their respective section and can then take a few items from the losers.

Last time I ran Pindleskin (SU category) and had a dismal showing for the time invested. Granted I didn't go all out but only ran as much as I felt like without making it a burden, so those with more dedication blew me away. The returns from Pindleskin are based purely on luck, and with him as a target luck has been hard to come by for me. So this time around I'm going back to Mephisto. I had originally thought about participating in the Level 85 area category but my Fishymancer simply can't compete with the other players running the Ancient Tunnels and Pits at extreme speed. I'd like to have some sort of chance, no matter how small, of placing in the top three. Therefore Mephisto it is.

Again Malice my main magic finder is my runner of choice. She's level 93 now (barely) and only gets used for magic finding purposes, therefore only in tournaments like this. I had to rearrange her inventory and equipment a bit as her last target was Pindleskin and the Harmony bow she had on switch wasn't going to be useful. That and I didn't need quite so many resistance charms since fire damage wasn't something I needed to worry about. This freed up a 4x6 area in her inventory to pick up items, meaning she wouldn't have to stop off at Cain every run to identify her loot.

Malice's runs followed a nice progression, slightly different from before based on some tips I've picked up. She starts in Act IV and uses Telekinesis on the WP to activate it. She does have to take a step to the side first as otherwise the spell fails. From there she teleports to Mephisto and uses Static Field to reduce his life to one half. She then steps backwards a bit to let the mercenary tank while she fires meteors and fireballs at him. Four meteors and about 12-15 fireballs later Mephisto is dead and I can review the dropped prizes. Then she teleports to the portal and uses it to enter Act IV again.

On average the mercenary requires 2-4 health potions per run to stay alive and Malice has to teleport him away on a regular basis in the vain attempt to keep him vertical. Even with all that he does have to be resurrected once every twenty runs or so. This is because he is wearing the wrong equipment, which I found out after the MFO was over. He has an Insight Cryptic Axe, Shaftstop and a Tal's helm. Instead he should be wearing the Shaftstop, a Rockstopper and Keplie Snare and then wouldn't require any health potions at all. Malice does lose the Meditation aura from the Insight so she'll have to drink a mana potion each run, but it does make things much easier with the alternative setup.

Malice made a total of 4534 Mephisto runs over the nine day tournament. In all this took 49 hours, 13 minutes and 19 seconds and netted her 421 total qualifiers. This came out to 10.8 runs per qualifier, which is right in line for the average I received last time running Mephisto. The 39 seconds per run however is much lower than that from last time, and I doubt I could get much lower without switching to a pure Blizzard sorceress instead of Malice. The number of runs however is over double what I performed last time, and it showed. I ended up coming in second place overall, even though I was last with only two days to go. Found four of the top five items on the very last day, which I spend all day running Mephisto with breaks here and there for sanity's sake.

Head Hunters Glory - 1

The prize of my loot is the Azurewrath, an item I've been searching a long time for. It is one of those items I keep seeing everyone else finding and yet I'm simply not able to. It's also the reason I ran Mephisto really, as he can drop it but Pindleskin can't. Just behind the Azurewrath was my next prized possession, a Tal's amulet. That completes the set for me as I found the armors last MFO running Pindleskin. Of course now I have to figure a build to make, but I have time for that. Beyond that I found enough class specific items (HoZ, Titans, Bactucs, Jalal's Mane) to keep any characters outfitted for a very long time.

Overall I am very pleased with this MFO. I didn't lose any items since I came in second and the top finisher plays Hardcore and therefore can't use my Softcore items. I also didn't take any items from people below me as I am self-found and intend to stay that way. The next MFO isn't for another six months so no idea which category I'd run that time around, assuming I have time to participate at all. Time will tell.

Diablo II: MFO #2

The Magic Find Olympics (MFO) is a contest run twice a year on the Single Player Diablo II forum. The basic premise is that each contestant picks something to run: Baal, Mephisto, Level 85 areas or Super Uniques. Then everyone has nine days to run those areas as much as possible, the person with the best items found wins their respective section and can then take a few items from the losers.

Last time I joined the Mephisto category and ran him until I was bored silly, and still lost badly. So this time I decided to run someone else since I had just about everything that Mephisto could drop. I choose Pindleskin since he can drop a ton of items I don't have. My one and only magic finder, Malice, was given the task of running Pindle until I couldn't run any longer. She was leveled up a bit more since last MFO, now at level 92 so surviving shouldn't be much of an issue.

I ended up 4th of out seven participants, so I was basically average of our group. Malice made around 2300 Pindle runs over the nine day period, averaging a run every twenty-nine seconds. Unfortunately my magic finding luck has been fairly poor as of late, and that carried over to the MFO. I averaged one qualifier every 79 runs, which is about four times higher than my past two Pindlethon averages. Needless to say my finds weren't spectacular by any stretch of the imagination, but at least no one above me wanted them so I could keep what I found.

Qualifiers:
IK Stone Cruser - 3
Laying of Hands - 2
Credendum - 1
M'avina's Embrace - 1
Wizardspike - 1
Shadow Killer - 1
Windhammer - 1
Hellslayer - 1
Lightsabre - 1
Viperfork - 1
Demon Limb - 2
Jade Talon - 1
Baranar's Star - 1
Rune Master - 1
Tal Rasha's Guardianship - 2
BK Sacred Charge - 1
Cranebeak - 1
Widowmaker - 1
Fleshripper - 1
M'avina's Caster - 1
Steel Shade - 1
Spirit Ward - 1
Alma Negra - 1

The Tal Rasha armors were the highlight of my stash. This ensured I only need to find the amulet to have the entire set. For non-qualifiers I did find a Paladin combat skiller and a Vex rune. However due to a mistake on my part my stashes for the past eight months were lost a few days ago so those items, along with quite a bit else were lost. Not to fret though, I still have all my items from the last Pindlethon and Mephathon so I don't need to do any magic finding to replace lost items.

I think for the next MFO I'm going to run something else, Pindle is a boring target. I'm thinking the Level 85 areas may be my next attempt. There I can add variety to the runs as well as use different characters if I want. That way socketables and so forth will increase my stash and after I lose I'll still be quite a bit richer than before.

Diablo II: Mephathon

The Mephathon is a new magic finding tournament extremely similar to the Pindlethon. The basic premise is that you must run Mephisto in Hell two thousand times. The person with the most interesting/rares drops wins. Along the way of course lots of good items will be found that will help out future characters. This is the main reason I joined, as I normally don't like magic finding, but if it is part of a competition then I'll do it.

This one was a bit rough as it fell right after the most recent Pindlethon. That's four thousand magic finding runs in a relatively short time span (for me). Obviously quite a few good items fell that give me some great ideas for future characters. Most notably is the M'avina's bow from this tournament and the helm and armor from the Pindlethon. Finishes the set for me so a Frost Maiden is in the works somewhere down the road.

Overall this Pindlethon was very productive, so here are the elite set/unique drops.

That was something I don't mind too much since I found several grailers that I didn't want to lose, and since I'm self found if my some miracle I won I wouldn't be taking items from anyone.

Here's the loot I collected during my runs.

Best runes: Amn - Shael - Hel

It was a fairly bad showing on my part, as I didn't receive a single vote. A lot of that had to do with the fact I ended up with the second least amount of items of anyone who completed their run set. Runs took about forty-five seconds apiece, which is a bit long for such runs but I like to pick up many rare items looking for endgame gear so lots of extra time is taken identifying and selling items. However I did find several items I've never seen before, most notably M'avina's True Sight which gets me one item closer to finishing the set as well as providing solid equipment for my planned bowazons.

Diablo II: Magic Find Olympics

The Magic Find Olympics (MFO) is a contest run twice a year on the Single Player Diablo II forum. The basic premise is that each contestant picks something to run: Baal, Mephisto, Level 85 areas or Super Uniques. Then everyone has nine days to run those areas as much as possible, the person with the best items found wins their respective section and can then take a few items from the losers.

I joined this with my one and only magic finder, Malice. In preparation for the tournament I leveled her from 83 to 88 in both the Pits and World Stone Keep (WSK). This was to make her more powerful, her mercenary better able to survive when tanking Mephisto and in search of a four open socket Monarch shield in order to make a Spirit runeword. On my very last Pit run before the tournament a zero socket Monarch dropped, so I used Malice's Hell difficulty socket quest reward to turn it into a mid level Spirit shield.

Then the games were on:

I ended up 7th in the Mephisto category, the winner actually took a week of vacation to participate so I didn't have a chance as I was only magic finding when I had free time instead of all day long. Overall here are some numbers of my participation:

201 qualifiers
2091 runs completed
10.4 runs per qualifier
39 hours 55 minutes 41 seconds spent overall

Each Mephisto run started off taking 74.35 seconds per each run. For each run I start in Act IV, use the Waypoint (WP) to Act III Durance Level 2 and then teleport to Mephisto. Once Mephisto is eliminated pick up my winnings, use a Town Portal (TP) to Act III town, visit Cain to identify the items and then Ormus to restock on potions and sell unneeded items. Then return via the WP to Act IV and quit the game. Rinse and repeat.

Obviously this is rather time consuming and as I played better ways were found that shortened the running time to 60.6 seconds per run. First was re-rolling the map to look more like this one, where only four teleports are required to reach level 3 of the Durance rather than the 12 I was using before. Also apparently it is possible to active a WP with the Telekinesis spell rather than having to walk/run to each one. These changes shaved 14 seconds off of my time and make the runs more effective, which became apparently when my best two drops occurred in the last two days of the tournament.

Overall it was fun, but a bit draining. I'm sure I won't be running Mephisto again anytime soon. Not only because I'm sick of seeing him but also because I have the vast majority of times he can drop in duplicate so the rewards wouldn't be very good. There won't be another one for six months so we'll see at that time if I partake again or not.
